So, my 2003 sport, 4.0 L SOHC V6 has started misbehaving. She decided to give me the check engine light. In the last 2000 miles she got a new fuel pump. One the way down the interstate the check engine light came on, and ensuing rough running. Had a flashing light for a time, then stopped. For the last two weeks, she starts rough and the misfire was only intermittent. Now, the misfire is a constant. I have new Motorcraft wires and Autolite double platinum plugs on the way. I am not convinced this will solve it as it started as intermittent and has just recently been a constant. What else do I need to look for? This is the first Ford I have owned in ages. I am used to working on GM and Toyotas, I can solve a misfire in those easy. Not so easy in this Ford. Thanks for reading.

P0316 code indicates possible timing issue. Is this a recent code? Missfire on a 4.0 sohc is usually spark related or broken valve spring from what I have seen. The p0316 code might mean that whole drivers side bank is off time but that wouldn't single out 1 cylinder, it would be 4,5 and 6

Both codes appeared at the same time. I saw that the P0316 could be caused by the cam sensor. It was cheap and easy, so I out a new one of those in and it didn’t change anything.

The misfire saga has come to a pleasant ending. It turns out the basics, plugs and wires were the fix. The downside to the project, the last moron who changed out plugs and wires had to put a helicoil in cylinder one. The reason I refer to them as a moron is they used thread locker to hold it in place. What started as a simple plug and wire job turned in to a tow truck ride and a three hundred dollar shop bill to get a mechanic to get the plugs sorted out. Positive, truck runs the best it has in my five months of owning it.
