My 2003 Explorer 4.6 Limited which has 200000 km (125000 m) on the clock has been showing the P0340 code for some time now and I can't get rid of it.
The P0340 code indicates a faulty cam speed sensor - I had it replaced with a new one.
Didn't fix it so I had the crank sensor replaced. Still didn't fix it.
In the last six months both heads were removed to replace a blown gasket. At the same time the valves etc. were restored and the timing chains replaced. In addition new earthing wires were installed (particularly to the alternator). Also it has had all three catalytic converters replaced. but still the P0340 code.
The symptoms are occasional misfirings, and a lack of acceleration. It starts well. it idles well (although sometimes it can be a little rough). The lack of acceleration is the major concern. The symptoms seem to be inconsistent - sometimes good, sometimes not so. I suspect it may need a new PCM but does that have ignition key issues?
Before I sink any more money into this car (which is otherwise in beautiful condition, and I want to keep it) maybe I am missing an easy quick fix.
