I have a 2001 Mountaineer AWD 5.0L Auto trans and I have a check engine light that came on with a P0720 "Output Shaft Speed Sensor Circuit" code. I checked under the vehicle for loose or broken wires and I found nothing. Problem I have is that I have no idea where the Sensor is located. I thought that it would be on the tail shaft housing but I don't see anything in that area. There is a sensor on top of the rear diff--is that it?

The vehicle does not have any shifting problems/speedo problems/O/D problems etc (of course that is according to the wife--I have not driven it yet)

Any one have an idea where to start?

if you're talking about the VSS (vehicle speed sensor), it's in the rear axle.

The code is P0720---"output shaft speed sensor circuit"

Ray look forward of the extension housing, up on top.

The manual that I have says that 2000 and newer the output shaft speed sensor is combined with the VSS on top of the rear diff (I had to read a LOT of the manual to find that little bit of info. I guess I am going to clear the code--if it comes back I will need to replace the sensor (everything is connected and the wiring looks okay) unless some one has a better idea?
