Check engine on, is this a switch/solenoid problem or is a band adjustment truely needed?

I don't show P01762 as a FORD proprietary code for 97 (which the 1000 series are). There are codes for solenoids failing off, some of the failure codes are electrical (often a bad solenoid) and some of them are possibly mechanical/hydraulic (bad solenoid or plugged solenoid). You SURE about that code ? Also there is not to my knowledge any code about the OD band per se. I suspect you got some bad info on the code and are innocently passing it on. We can help you, just need better data.

I was reading a TSB, and noticed there IS apparently a code 1762, I am sorry. You might find this TSB of interest:

Here it is... TSB 03-22-10...

FORD: 1995-2001 EXPLORER
1995-2002 RANGER
1996-1997 AEROSTAR
2000-2002 EXPLORER SPORT
2001-2002 EXPLORER SPORT TRAC
MERCURY: 1997-2001 MOUNTAINEER

This article supersedes TSB's 03-11-9, 02-13-8 and 02-08-2 to update the model coverage.

ISSUE:
Some vehicles built prior to 12/1/2001 may exhibit the following shift and engagement conditions:

No 2nd Gear
No 3rd Gear
No Engine Braking In Manual 1st.
Out of specification pressures controlled by the transmission main control valve body separator plate may be the cause.

ACTION:
Verify the condition, the main control valve body separator plate may need to be updated to the latest level. Refer to the following Service Procedure for details.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

CAUTION: A NEW SEPARATOR 7Z490 MUST BE USED WHEN INSTALLING THE SPECIAL SERVICE KIT 7M203 OR ADDITIONAL TRANSMISSION DAMAGE MAY OCCUR. REFER TO THE PARTS APPLICATION CHART IN THIS ARTICLE FOR CORRECT SEPARATOR PLATE PART LISTING.

NOTE: THIS ARTICLE DOES NOT APPLY TO ANY OTHER CONDITIONS OR COMPONENTS THAT MAY CAUSE SIMILAR SYMPTOMS AND IS ONLY WRITTEN TO COVER THESE SPECIFIC CONDITIONS.

NOTE: AN IN-LINE SERVICE FILTER IS NOT REQUIRED TO BE ADDED OR REPLACED FOR THIS TSB.

Verify that one or more of the following conditions exist.
Low Line Pressure While In Drive At WOT
No 2nd And/Or No 3rd Gear
No Engine Braking In Manual 1st
DTC P0732, P0733 Or P1762
Install Kit (3L5Z-7M203-JA) to update the main control valve body assembly, refer to the installation procedures found in the kit.
Reinstall the main control by continuing to follow the installation steps listed in the Workshop Manual, in-vehicle service, main control valve body.
After completing the procedure, verify the condition has been corrected.
Clear all DTCs.

i wonder if a new separator plate and gasket is all i need to take care of that code in my transmission. however, a mechanic did say that p1762 is a solenoid code, however, i have not verified this anywhere. nothing online at all about it being a solenoid problem.

Such a code could be generated from shaft sensor reading comparisons as opposed to electrical at the solenoid. I'd try the TSB approach if I were you - new sep plate and do the blowoff mod at the same time....) and add VB upgrades while I was at it (see the 5R55E Valve Body Rebuild Diary in the stickies section.)

what is tss and oss reading comparisons?

TSS is the turbine shaft (input speed) sensor. The OSS is the output shaft speed sensor. The computer knows what the ratios should be for various gears... (eg.. if the input speed is X in OD, the output should be Y.) I realized the answer was a bit snooty with TSS and OSS thrown in there so I just changed it to read shaft sensors.

thanks :)

when the overdrive started to go, when i had the code, the rpms bounced from 2 to 2 1/2. is that a sign of gasket failure, or the epc solenoid dying?

is a new separator plate and gasket all i need?
i was thinking shift solenoids. which would be easier to replace and is there any way to verify which one it is?

i have a 97 ranger 4 liter. are these the right parts?

okay so i have the wrong parts listed there. can you give me the list i need please. i dont see that part # there

Bit of a resurrection but what came of this fix?
