Painting a X a different color?

How hard is it to paint an Explorer a different color. Example. Mine is black. I was think of painting it Zinc yellow. How would the paint shop do the inside of the doors/hatch, & the engine compartment? Or would they not paint those? Is it more expensive to paint another color then if I was repainting the whole truck the same black color?

If you wanted the inside of the doors and engine compartment etc, painted yellow that would require pretty much taking everything out of the truck. Start with just the frame and body and paint. Thats a lot of work. Although, IMO, yellow and black go well together so if you didnt get everything painted yellow it might look kinda cool.

When I had Maaco repaint my Toyota truck from blue to metallic gray, they didn't include under the hood and the door jambs in my estimate. Being only 19 at the time, I was naive. I noticed it when I went to leave after picking up my truck. They charged me an extra couple hundred bucks to do the door jambs and said it wouldn't be worth doing the firewalls and fenders under the hood. They did do the bottom of the hood though. I ended up buying a spray can of flat black and covered up most things that weren't black already and painted it myself. It came out looking pretty good under the hood being black since it matched everything else already. The paintjob on my truck though was about the worst quality I could have gotten, even after spending about $800. That was in 1985.

i think most good paint jobs will cost 2000 minimum for the whole car including basically every bit of the car being painted. if u want to go crazy and exotic.. ive heard of 10-20k paintjobs

The shop I work for , an all over paint job goes $3,500.00 same color only.
$6,500.00 all over with color change.
Body repair not included.

The big charge is due to the fact that all the big money is in collision repair. An allover paint job takes so much time it slows down the progress of those jobs.
It is all pretty involved.
With your truck being black I would just have them " cut in " the fenders , but go ahead and paint the door jams.

ditto.. monmix is correct.. most body shops dont like to full paintjobs.. just cus collision is easier money,..

You figure it takes as long to paint the door jams, under the hood, etc. as it does the whole outside of the vehicle. There is a lot more prep work when you are doing door jams.

You also have to remember when you go to sell the vehicle you won't get much for it because the color has been changed.
Dealers won't give you anything for a trade if the color has been changed.

Well I can't get much for the truck now. I have tried to sell it. Thanks for the painting input. I was thinking about redoing the whole truck. Built 4.0 with a supercharger, replacing basically everything. More of a go fast truck then off road.

The same reason dealerships dont usually take mods into considersation when appraising a vehicle....dealers want to sell stock vehicles.....liability and such!!!

I understand about mods, but I mean, if it was done by a good, reputable paint shop (ie, not your cousin with a spray can), it should still be acceptable.

Especially with some of the factory paint jobs out there. I mean, my hood is crap, thanks to the factory paint. I would think a dealership would much prefer a repainted hood to the hood I have now.

I am not really sure why except they do. I also know your color code is on the door and on your title and if you change the color the police don't like it because they might be looking for a green Explorer that is wanted for something, but it has been repainted pink and they would never find it.

I don't know if that is part of it or not, but dealers don't like vehicles that have been repainted a different color.

I'm paying $2400 to have my Explorer Sport painted from blue to orange. That includes having the black interior parts painted the same color and the door jams. Although it doesn't include under the hood. I think I'll just bomb it with some rattle can black.

I heard that if you get the car painted a different color, you have to have the title changed also(because of the color). I think the only way you could get away with it is if you do shades of the original color like from light green to dark green or something like that but in your case, there is no different shades of black

Dealers don't want cars that have the color changed or an all over paint job for that matter. Because when people are looking at cars, paint on wires under the hood or in fender wells or any where else paint shouldn't be = BODY DAMAGE in the buyers mind at least. And if the buyer thinks body damage then they are not going to buy the car or at least not for the same amount they would pay for one with factory paint. I know MONMIX is going to say that with a good paint job paint wouldn't be where it shouldn't. But if you know paint you can tell 95% of the time if a car has been resprayed.
