painting running boards

i'm doing some updating on my x and plan on painting the running boards. for those that have removed them before.......would it be better to paint them in place or can i remove them, paint and then put them back without tearing something up? just looking for the best option.

Since you're going to paint, I personally would remove them unless you prepare your area really good because of the overspray, I would remove them eitherway.

just like monmix said, remove them. if not only for the fact that you wont have to have the truck be down while your painting. just use tape in the areas that you think may get scratched when puttin them back on. and what kind of running boards are they and what color are you going with?
