What material is the gasket made out of?

They usually recommend not applying anything to a rubber pan gasket. I once didn't pay attention to the caution label on a rubber pan gasket which said not to apply adhesive because it could cause a leak. Guess what happened. It leaked, and I had to remove the gasket, clean it, then reinstall it.

Thanks, wasn't sure on that one. I've bought some stuff at Advance that's made for rubber gaskets, don't know if I'm going to use it or not yet.
