Part found in Trans pan.

I'm helping a friend R&R his 4R70W Trans. When we removed the pan, the following part was laying in the pan. What is it and where does it go?

It's normal. Dipstick plug that gets pushed in when the tube is inserted. That pic is on here two dozen times.

Welcome to this forum! That part is just a plug, and could be discarded. It means that the fluid & filter were never changed. We have a sticky thread on the top of the transmission section about this: http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=189920
