I'm jealous of people who have 4lo and can run 2wd whenever they want so I decided to swap a part time case. I decided on the NP208 because it has a lower lo than an NP205, plus I wouldn't have to modify my transmission adapter and build a crossmember like I would if I decided with the 205. I'm pretty sure the 205 would be a much better fit than the 208.
Llast tuesday I bought an NP208 from an early 80s bronco.
That way it has a fixed yoke output rather than a slip yoke.
Tonight I tried fitting it in.
After much swearing and cutting a small tiny bit off of the transfer case housing, I got it over the tranny tailshaft.
To get it over the tailshaft, my friend and I had to shove the tail end of the transfer case up into the space between the cats and gas tank. When doing this, the front driveshaft output isn't on the passenger side but it's downward.
Then we raise the front of it up and get it past the tailshaft of the tranny and slide it forward and onto it. Then we rotate the front driveshaft output towards the driver's side. This is where I ran into the problem, we had to cut a bit of the case that sticks out. Approx less than a 1/4" piece, not really sure what it was for, but seemed pretty useless.
Gasket issue, seems like we can re-use the old gasket, it's not paper, not cork, but... sort of plastic like. I'm going to use high temp rtv silicone with it anyways. The driveshaft is going to need to be shortened. There is most likely going to be modification to the transmission crossmember for the front output to clear, i'll be more sure on that tomorrow. Since I didn't get any linkage with the transfer case, i'll need to fab that up. The stock bolts won't work for the NP208 case, so I have to get new bolts for it tomorrow.
I'll hopefully have pictures up tomorrow.
