Because of my transmission swap, I need to buy a new computer.

I was told by several Explorans that they purchased their new computers by just going to the dealership and giving them some simple info (year, engine, transmission, t-case) and was able to get a new computer.

With that in mind, I went to my Ford dealership where the parts guys are usually helpful. Twice they insisted that I need an exact part number from an old computer and that was the only way they could order me one. They said that the computer would run about $300. They also several times warned me that it is very dangerous to swap computers from different years and models because, even they, in the past, have "fried lots of things".

I had a '99 SOHC w/ auto trans and electronic t-case. I now have a '99 SOHC w/ man trans and same electronic t-case but I'm going to run the circuit seprately from the computer (in the future swap it for a manual t-case). I'm interested in swapping in a computer from a 2001 Explorer Sport SOHC w/ manual transmission and manual t-case.

Any thoughts on this? Are those the only factors that the computers differ on, engine, transmission, and t-case, or are their more factors?

even though the connector may fit, you need to know what pin on you old ECM goes to what so that you can swap the wires in the connector to the correct location on the new ECM. I new a guy that pieced together a Mustang, he used the ECM from a Taurus LX. He did have some problems with some accessories not working properly, but you swapping within the same line of vehicle would probably be OK.
