PCV valve replacement

Good afternoon all, I need to replace the PCV valve on my 03 Explorer 4.0. Is it absolutely necessary to remove the air intake and plenum? I can't seem to get my hands in there far enough to remove it or even see it. I know it's location but can't get to it. Any help is greatly appreciated.
