'99 Explorer Sport 4x4
New to the site - great info so far!

I just bought a used 1999 Ford Explorer Sport 4x4 with 107K. It didn't come with any of the manuals, so I downloaded the owner's manual and service manual from www.fleet.ford.com

I was reading the service manual, and the schedule for 100K includes the following:

"Replace PCV valve (except for 4 cylinder engines. See page 5.)"

Flip to page 5, and here's what it says:

"No Cost PCV Valve Replacement

For all light truck vehicles equipped with V6, V8, or V10 engines, your dealer will replace the PCV valve free of charge at 100,000 miles except in California and Canada. For all passenger vehicles with V-6 or V-8 engines, it is not necessary to replace the PCV valve until 100,000 miles. This replacement will be at the vehicle
owner’s expense. If you are unsure about your engine type, ask your dealer."

The Explorer is considered a light truck vehicle and not a passenger vehicle correct? I took the manual into my local dealership, and they balked at replacing it. Does anyone have experience dealing with this?

pcv valve is an emission component which makes it a warranty item that is covered under emissions.

7/70 or 8/80. federal / cali.

That is for the '99 year model, changes in 2000 and up. But that's what it says..........

haha i'm wrong guess some laws changed, since federal its 3/36 covered.

it used to be 7/70or 8/80 federal/cali. for pcv. cats are covered. pcv no longer. funny.

i just looked up in a 2010 manual.

So the dealer is require to change it, correct? Do you have experience with convincing them to do it? Should I cite the law, or call Ford?

Thanks for your help!

It's a bit of a PITA, but you could probably replace it yourself with half the hassle of trying to convince a Ford dealership to work you into their schedule to perform a free service. Not to mention the time involved calling to set up the appointment, driving there and waiting.

And the valve itself costs like.... less than $3.

this was pre y2k free pcv's, you can try but i doubt you get anywhere, if this is for a 99 year vehicle, they dont even support it past recalls.

Welcome to this forum! I've moved your thread into the stock 95-01 section. It's not worth wasting time on a part that cost a few dollars, and takes a couple of minutes to replace. You could clean the old PCV with brake cleaner spray instead of replacing it.
