How important is it to replace the PCV valve hoses?

Also, the original post says "Removing the front hose is ESSENTIAL to removing the valve. " Why is this?

I think its only important to replace the PCV hoses if they are fatigued or cracked.

As for removing the front hose, I don't agree that it is important. I think it depends on which way you choose to attack the problem, but I certainly didn't have to remove the front one to get the PCV removed. As a matter of fact, I didn't remove any of the hoses, I just rotated the PCV hose end with the PCV Valve in it up.

Cool, thanks.

Two more things before I give this a whirl (trying to resolve a stutter in my idle)...

Just want to make sure I have this right so I don't f'''' something up. After pouring 1/2 to 3/4 of the Seafoam into the tube where the PCV valve was, I then pour the rest into the fill tube for the engine oil? Seems like if that is the case I would need to replace the engine oil then, right? And I can also pour a bottle into my gas tank?

- EDIT -
One more thing, I just called my local Ford parts store and they only sell the kit... he said it couldn't locate just the valve. I gave him the part number that was written on it, EV-152. Did anyone else have this problem?

Also, is this the right flavour of Sea Foam? I know they make a few different products.

Don't add it to the oil unless your ready for an oil change. The seafoam will loosen a bunch of sludge up and you'll end up with that stuff floating around in your oil. If you put in your oil, drive around for a day or two and then change it. I usually just put the rest into my gas tank.

You can get the PCV valve at the local parts store, or Ford. It'll have a right angle connector on the end of it, but you don't want that. I kept bringing them back until I realized that the elbow pulls right off.

I'd recommend sucking the seafoam out of the can instead of pouring it in. You can get a smaller hose that will fit in the PCV hose and then run that to the can. Easier to control the flow that way so you don't stall out the engine by sucking too much in. I just stuck the hose in the bottom and used a pair of pliers to control the flow. I think someone else here made them recommendation.

Yea, that's what I figured. Guess I'll wait on that then.

All Ford had here was the kit for $30, and I'm not sure I would want to get a non-Motorcraft part for this. Now I did just look on RockAuto, and they have the Motorcraft one, but the part number is a little different. The one I pulled from my truck is EV152, while RockAuto's has EV152D. Any ideas if the "D" makes a difference or not?

I'd recommend sucking the seafoam out of the can instead of pouring it in.

I actually had no trouble slowly poring the Sea Foam in without the engine shutting off. Instead of pouring it directly down, I let it kind of flow diagonally to slow it down.

Doing the Sea Foam treatment itself was actually a piece of cake. Unfortunately, it didn't solve my idle problem. But my PCV valve was rattling, which if I'm correct, that's bad. So we'll see what happens when I get a new valve. - EDIT - Oh wait, actually... is rattling good?

No, a PCV valve that rattles is a good sign. Try a new one and see what I mean.

thats awesome instead of having to pay out the a$h for a bg service you got that an just as effective from the photos awesome work !!

Sea Foam

Just wanted to add to the Sea Foam thread...

Today at work, I sea foamed two Xplorers. 1/2 can each. 98 OHV with 125,000 (mine) and 2000 SOHC with 200,000. Both foamed for the first time.

For the OHV, I went through the PCV. The for SOHC through the brake booster.

The OHV had a few puffs of smoke during application. It sat for about 15 mins, started right up and just another small puff or two. No CEL.

The SOHC was a smoke machine. Smoked during and after application for at least 5 minutes. Big, white clouds! Very dramatic. No CEL.

Result: minor improvement in idle and off-idle response. Definately worth doing every now and again with or without the fun smoke.

I have been a SeaFoam freak since i got my 95 Tbird, learned about it on my Tbird Forums, i have used it in every car i have had since, but alwasy went though the brake booster. I have alwasy had good results, nice light smoke, But on the SOHC 4.0 and a 3.8 V6, would the front pvc hose be in a similar spot? i will give that location a shot my next treatment.

OK, what is the benefit of this seafoam treatment?
Is it needed? Anyone notice a different?
is there a condition or milage factor that it needs to be done?

I just got a 96 eddie bauer with 140 k on it.

Gonna do plugs, wires, fuekl filter, air filter and oil & filter.

I want to sea foam it also.

Do you recommend sea foaming before or after the new plugs?

Also I'd like to do it all at once... what do yuo recommend about puring it into the crankcase and then doing an oil change so soon after. OR do you recommend holding on to the half can for 2950 miles and then drop it in before my NEXT oil change?

thanks for the help

I'd do the plugs after seafoaming it.

As for oil changes, I have used Amsoil Engine Flush, which gets dumped into the crankcase, idle for 10-15 minutes, and drain. Don't have any opinion on the seafoam, but a lot of people seem to add 1/3-1/2 a can between oil changes.

Do the Sea Foam before the plugs. I never recommend it in the crankcase.

Good luck ....

Thanks!

And next time... I'll use spell check!
