2003 xlt 5-speed manual
Hi Folks! I'm the owner of a rare 2002 4X2 5 speed manual, 3:73 limited slip rear end Explorer XLS. I would like to get some ideas on performance parts, both engine management and suspension, and aftermarket wheels..Any ideas?

sounds pretty hot!
Always start with the basics: Intake & Exhaust... you could also consider a chip re-tune... depending on your goals, you might want to go with a power adder, too... there are a few forced induction kits available for the X.
tell us more about what you want this little truck to do!

as the other guy in here said, change intake and exhaust first thing.. those r the cheapest mods to get u a good bit more power... my 0-60 went down 5 seconds when i changed both... the muffler is holding back tons of air and the stock air intake isnt letting it breath much... and if u r to get a cold air intake, make sure u change the tube or hack off the little buldge-like deal on the outside... its just a plastic container that causes turbulance and steals airflow... i went with a flowmaster 40 exhaust and if u wanna hear a clip let me kno

yea in an explorer.... although still not spectacular since its an SUV, went form a 13 to an 8.5... so i guess not 5 seconds but 4.5... still a good gain of power there

I'm no fluid dynamics expert but I believe the "buldge" is to increase volume of the system and change the frequency that it resonates. I doubt removing it'll change flow characteristics one iota. It's sorta like changing the volume of a muffler. IMO it's best to focus on freeing up the exhaust as that's far more restrictive and is the "bottle neck" of the gas flow system. Remember that the liquid fuel gets chemically converted to gas in large volumes during combustion. So the exhaust has to route much more volume than the intake does.

yea wheeler i kno wut u mean and someone mentioned to me that the buldge piece may have been to catch moisture and to keep it from going into the cylinders... im sure it wasnt a huge difference but im kind of OCD about that stuff and it makes me feel a little better with that piece being off...

and aldive my engine is a stock 4.0 V6 with only the 360 degree air filter and a flowmaster muffler.... the main power gain was when i changed out the muffler... as wheeler had mentioned earlier, changing out a stock muffler frees up tons of air and allows much better flow... since ive replaced my air filter, i can hear it drawing in air and it seems to me like its breathing much better... ive beat a few rice rockets and its made me feel pretty awesome to beat a 4 cylinder with a V6 SUV and put it in its place haha... the exhaust sounds great btw and if ur interested in the sound, let me kno and ill send a link to my video of it

It's going to be hard to believe the 5 second gain with just an intake and exhaust. I've did every mod there is to do except headers on the 4.0 SOHC and I went from a 9.4 to around a 7.0 - 7.3 0-60. I'm trying to get down in the 6 second range, but even then, it's still slow. The only way to make these things fast, and really have something worth talking about, is to force feed. Again, even then, you'll still get smoked by a modded mustang or something that's built.

However, this is all the fun! Take something challenging and try and make it fast. The most challenging aspect, is getting past the frustration.

Don't think so buddy.if you had add larger MAF, throttle boody, headers , underdrive pulleys an electric fan and a chip tune i may believe that, but 5 SECONDS IMPROVEMENT FROM 0-60 with just intake and exhaust <<<<<<<<<< NO WAY >>>>>>>>>>>>>>

holy **** guys take it easy good god... dont kill me or anything.. maybe it was like 11 or 10.. **** idk... but its better now haha thats the whole point of me suggesting it

Were you testing those times when Katrina was visiting bigapple? Not sure what the statute of limitations is before we can use a devastating hurricane as part of a joke, but I thought it was kinda lighthearted.

I would like to hear what you V6 sounds like. I have the 4.6l V8 and am curious. I don't really want volume, but I would like a low growl.

If memory serves me, it was YOU who made the preposterous statement.

Just out of curiosity

What is the average age of most of the people in this forum?

dont even ####ing joke about katrina.. that **** is not funny so i dont wanna hear it.. dont wanna go into further detail with family complications from the storm

u can check my clip at youtube... search V6 exhaust explorer or check another thread to find the link

An Intake and exhaust will do you alot of good, but will not shave off 5 seconds in the 0-60 alone.

Like I said, I've done; intake MAC, exhaust GIBSON CAT, Custom front with Magnaflow CAT (Entire exhaust, not just a cat back), e-fan, crank pulley, water pump pulley, TB, C&L MAF, SCT Flasher tunned by JAH81492, ported stock intake, major weight reduction, JBA wires,..ect (I'm probably forgetting something...

All this and went from a 9.4 to around 7 flat. (2.4 total)

Sorry bigun,

I have family in Lake Charles that lost their house, but were able to head North to Leesville. When Rita came through my Uncle who lives near De ridder lost the roof to his barn.

Like I said - I don't know the statute of limitations, but if you have been in a category 3 or better, which I have in NOLA and Wilmington, NC and seen the destruction then hey, All you can do is thank God you made it through.

I hope you didn't lose anyone in it and if you did I am truly sorry.

Johson
