Welcome to the site! Most start off with intake and Exhaust. Then you can get a chip and a few other mods. Use the search and you should find plenty off modded explorers.

Welcome to the site! You can get a KKM intake from http://www.kustomz.com/ . Also a common mod is a free-flowing exhaust. From there you can get all kinds of bolt-on mods that will give you more power but they are more $$$$.

There aren't many bolt-ons you can get, and most are expensive because of the low amount of sales. With all the bolt-ons you'll notice a nice increase in power and throttle response, but you'll still be pretty slow.

what kind of bolt on mods are we talking about and around what are some of the prices

Intake (KKM) - about $100
Cat-back exhaust (Flowmaster)- about $174 - $200. Custom job from exhaust shop will be alot more, but better.
Chip (Apten) - about $300
Throttle Body (BBK) - about $220
Mass Airflow Sensor (Pro M or Granatelli) - about $300

That's the top 5 performance mods people usually go w/ first. But like Husky said, even if you did all of those and more, you'll still be pretty slow. He would know, he's got all of those plus a few more.

If i was to do an exhaust system, how much of a difference will doing the entire cat-back make compared to just doing a new muffler, and it would be a flowmaster. oh yeah and what about headers, are there many options for those.

Do intake first. KKM then exhaust. Do a cat-back, 2.25", you get new pipes and they're bent better. I've got Borla headers (not made anymore). I'm actually not sure if any headers are still made for first gen X's. I'd look for JBA or BBK, ceramic coated. I wouldn't recommend headers unless you're planning on running boost.
