I just bought a 99 Explorer XLT with the SOHC 6. When we test-drove it, my wife heard a "funny noise" when the car was braking. Our mechanic concluded that the right front brake rotor was causing the noise and should be replaced, which he did at our expense.

Today I learned from reading the PO's service records that the brake rotors had been replaced twice before.

What causes this problem, and what's the best solution?

What do you mean by "funny noise"? Is the problem still happening or is it gone now that the rotor has been replaced? Were the brake pads or calibers ever replaced at the same time? Can you be more specific about the noise.

Take one brake pad off on that side of the explorer and see if it is worn unevenly, it should be smooth and straight. You could have a sticking caliber which could cause quite a few problems. If you usually dont work on your own cars you should at least do this. I have a 99' Sport and these brakes are the easiest to work on that I have ever done.
