Here is a pic of the 5.0 that I want to swap into my girlfriend's '93 xlt. I have messed with Chevy trucks for 14 years but never any Fords. My question is - will this engine work for the swap? Dimensionwise, will it physically fit? We will be adding a 3" body lift also to help with the clearance.

I have done a lot of reading on the 5.0 swap and may have a few other questions before it is done. The donor car has an AOD(-E?) transmission that I plan to use also. I don't want a $550 adapter to mate it to the stock transfer case because the stock case will probably break. What are my transfer case options from the full size trucks? We plan on doing a SAS at the same time, so driveshaft length is not an issue, and fabbing a new crossmember is no problem either.

Where is the beef?

im sure physically it will fit from what ive read anyway but be prepared do have some headaches with wiring and stuff. The aode is an automatic overdrive electronic trans i believe , the trans in the first gen 91-94 is the a4ld its kind of a weak transmission I would look into swapping it for the 700r4?its a chevy tranny, i think thats what its called but you will need an adapter for it but Ive heard its a much stronger tranny. good luck hope this info will be of use to you

Thanks for the link dreamr, that's a lot of reading, I'll be busy for a while... :D

What vehicle did your 5.0L come out of? What year?

There are several things an average "car" version of the 5.0L needs before it will go into a Gen I Explorer, exhaust, front dress, cooling, emissions, etc just to start, it can be done for sure and is done all the time....

Research this more and you will find the answers you are looking for.
The AOD-E is a great choice, also the BW1354 transfer case that is in your 93 is more then capable of handling the 5.0L power, you can use the advanced adapters adapter to retain this case and avoid driveshaft issues or you can spend more and get an Atlas II. Your other option is to try and find a Ford 6 bolt T case that will physically fit under the Explorer, dana 20 is HUGE and will not fit from what I understand, frame rails, exhaust, and fuel tank are all in the way......

Thanks for the additional info 410. The donor vehicle is a 1992 Thunderbird Sport. I have the complete car, it still runs and drives, so I can be sure to have as many parts as possible when I do the swap. I don't have any emissions testing where I live, and probably won't have in my lifetime, so the emissions don't concern me. I am new to Fords and fuel injection, so you are right that I have a lot of reading to do. I read in another post of yours answering a 5.0 question where you linked to websites that deal mostly with older rangers and the 5.0 swap, are they basically the same as the explorers?

easiest thing to do is try to find a wrecked/totaled 5.0 explorer and snag the harness and other parts you may need, such as mounts and the crossmember, might make things a little easier
