is it pinging or more of a ticking sound? if it's ticking, then its most likely just worn-out lifters. which is annoying, albeit harmless to your truck.

what are the miles on your car? you might need to up the octane and see if that does the trick.

its not the lifters starting to see charclole marks on exshost so exsohst leak thanks thought

Pinging is very characteristic of the 4.0. I ran premium fuel in mine.

When they get a bit of age and some carbon deposits, they start to have too high a combustion chamber temp. and pinging comes with the territory. Also, have you changed spark plugs and wires? Retain stock Motocraft double platinum for best performance.

Besides carbon buildup, lower intake manifold leaks which are "somewhat" common can also cause pinging.

I second the loose lower intake bolts...New gaskets and my problems are now gone!
Use the search thread here...LOTS of tips on things to look into and try. You'll be amazed at how simple the problem can be to fix. But sometimes though, you do have an issue that needs to be resolved. Try the simple, the cheap and the easy before throwing money, time and patience at it.
