plastic trim

My 2000 mounty has the stock plastic trim around the sides, My question is what's underneath that? in other words...If I take it off will it look weird?

It has the long plastic pieces on the sides and underneath those are the wider pieces that make it look two tone, If i take off just the long pieces is there a gap between the body and the bottom wider pieces? (that the running boards connect with)

If I remember right, ive seen a few off roading rigs with that stuff ripped off, and theres tons of holes for the rivets or whatever theyre called that holds them on...

In other words, VERY ugly, id either leave it, spray paint it, or get it professionally painted lol
