I changed the spark plugs on my Xlt last weekend. I put in some autolite plugs. My problem is that now my car vibrates alot when Idle. Also there is white smoke coming out of the exhaust. When I purchased the plugs the shop said I didn't have to gap the plugs. So I went ahead and put them in like that. Please someone help me and explain to me whats causing the white smoke and very bad vibration. Also what is the correct gap for a 95 xlt 4.0 Automatic. I need to fix the problem as soon as possible I don't want to see my BABY vibrate anymore.

Thanks Everyone!

I hope that you put your plug wires back in the proper order. If your performance feels worse, even the slightest bit, your engine may be detonating. Check that ASAP! It will shorten your engine life. I would also gap those plugs according to the specs. under the hood - I believe for my 91 its .52 or in that area. Also, the only plugs that I know of that don't need to be gapped out of the box are the Bosch+4s.

I would have to agree with Mike91 as you might not have the correct fireing order on the plugs. Also if you didn't change the plug wires, you might have a bad plug wire or 2. I know that when I changed my plugs, I broke 2 of them.

Magic-Did you disconnect your battery cable while doing the change to reset your computer? Other than not putting it in the proper firing order as Mike and Ray suggested, the rough idle and smoke may suggest a bad fuel pressure regulator. When the one in my '91 went bad, it felt like I was only on four cylinders and smoke poured out of my exhaust. I found out my fuel pressure was around 92psi instead of 30-32psi which caused fuel mixture to be too rich. Once the valve was replaced the smoking stopped and the engine ran smooth again. If you do need a regulator, check out wrenchhead.com. I found regulators for my '91 ranging in price from $72.98 to 97.99 depending on manufacturer. Hope this helps.

I would pull at least 1 spark plug and check the gap. The last set of plugs I got were gapped at 44 and they told me the same thing.. After installing them I just happened to be looking under the hood and noticed the sticker (emission) and it says my plugs should be gapped at .54-.56. This means I need to pull them, regap and then reinstall them. At least I've done it before and get it done in just under 2 hours (I pull the passenger inner fenderwell to get to the last plug).
