Greetings:

My 93 ford explorer eb edition 4.0 4wd has some type of wedges instead of caliper bolts. They appear to be some sort of 2 piece metal setup with what looks to be a small peice of metal rod jammed into between. This is on the bottom and top of the caliper, whereas normally bolts would go here. I tried to tap them out but only got so far. These bugs are begining to attack!! However, is anyone familiar with this type of setup? It also appears as though the caliper slides off of this slacks. It looks as though I might have to use a small punch to tap via the center (inbetween) each slot to tap it all the way out. They sort of like like this () in addition to having a small type of rod in between them. I am looking for standard caliper bolts, when I just happened upon these:rolleyes:!! Any suggestions and or certain type of tool recommendations would be greatly apprecaited! :)Thanks in advance!

...A diagram can be found at the bottom of the first post in this thread...;)

...Those are caliper slide pins and they actually do slide and need to be kept greased so they can...If you look on the outside of each metal pin you will see a "Rise" that keeps them from sliding out...

...You can use a punch or screwdriver to push them out but don't use the center, it is rubber...You want to put your punch on the outside edge of the metal part and tap it forward and inward until both "Rise" pieces are touching the caliper...Then keep tapping each one until the rise of both are starting to go inside the channel...

...You can then just tap them thru...I usually put on new pins on every brake job myself but they are reusable as long as they are smooth and the rise is still good enough to really hold them in....I hope this helps...:hammer:

Thanks! You have been extremely helpful. I have a can of synthetic bearing grease that I will use upon doing the re-install. You have a tremedous amount info! Thanks again!

...You are very welcome...:D

So those pins need to be greased? Dang, I'm gonna have to yank mine and put some grease on em : )

I used some good synthetic grease, I also greased under the hub bearing caps. I really packed extra grease into these caps.I greased all 4 pins, and I also added a light coating of grease the tracks on which they slide into. This stuff is very stout, whereas it won't wash out as easily, and is very tolerant of high heat, yet winter temp rated. :D

I actually went and did mine after I made that post. Had a little packet of brake grease from autozone.
