lately my '94 Explorer has been making some noises accelerating that are coming from the engine. it mostly happens under moderate to hard acceleration, when its hot outside. i went to Autozone to get the computer codes pulled and it came up with like 4 codes with the EGR valve and one dealing with the cylinder. the guy said not to worry about the cylinder one and to just fix the EGR valve. but i was thinking that the way its acting ,the cylinder code might be more important than he thinks and maybe its detonation? im going to replace the EGR valve and sensor, but does anyone have any ideas of what else it might be?

its a '94 4x4, 4.0L

thanks,
chris

Would you describe the sound as a pinging/ticking noise? There are a lot of threads already covering it in both this forum and the general explorations forum. It is one of the most common problems with us Gen 1 X'ers.

In a nutshell, the two most common fixes are retorquing the lower intake manifold, (especially if the cylinder code is for #5), and cleaning the MAF. Remember to reset the computer after each fix so it can relearn the fuel/air mixture. Otherwise it won't make any difference.

i would definately say that it is a pinging noise. the code wasnt specific to the cylinder. i will try cleaning the MAF and reseting the computer.
