i started my car tonite after it was sitting for about 10 hrs. when i parked it everything was fine. when i went to leave it was making a weird rattling sound from the engine.i thought it might have been because it was cold. alot of times when it sits over nite & cold in the morning it will idle rough & want to almost stall out. but it never rattled b4, so i let it sit for a min to warm up but it never stopped. it did the usual chug for a min like it does. the sound doesnt really increase with with the driving. its pretty consistant. & after about 25 mins driving home thinking the engine was going to blow the CEL popped on. the codes were for 1-2-3 misfires & Banks 1 & 2 running lean. im gonna replace the plugs & wires tomarrow, but im really worried about what that rattle could be, i do feel a loss of power while driving. 1 time when i 1st left when i accelerated from a stop light the car almost didnt even want to go. gas was pushed & i was barely moving but the rpms didnt go up just pedal down & nothing was happening. where should i start to look for my culprit,

thanxx

timing chains? got a feeling you lost a guild / tentioner on the motor, and timing moved.

Definately check your plugs, clean the MAF. How old are the plug wires?

Could you tell us which engine you have? V6 or V8? If V6 is it the OHV or SOHC?

Your code decription is a little vague. Can you tell us what they actually are?

the truck is a 4.0 SOHC. i dont know when the plugs were changed. but i noticed went out side today & tried to start it it sounded like its coming from the cat or something undrneath.

it doesnt sound like a heat sheild rattle. im going to go & get plugs in a bit. what kind is recammended for tis thruck. is it the dbl plat.

autolite or motorcraft. basic plugs work best.

ok i read thru this a few times. & i took it by my brother in laws for him to take a look @ it. he said the sound is coming from the passenger front. for the guide in the previous post it says that that is in the upper left would that be the same 1 my brother in law is talking about. also does the motor need to come out to replace that 1? also if that is the problem is it ok to drive the car for a lil bit or is it not drivable. i know i probably shouldnt, but i have too.

belt tensioner?

For clarification: left is the driver side and right is the passenger side in North America.

If the rattle is coming from the passenger side upper then it can't be the left timing chain guide. It might be the alternator, serpentine belt idler pulley or or water pump. To check remove the serpentine belt and run the engine for 30 seconds. The engine will not overheat in 30 seconds without the water pump turning. If the rattle is still present then it is internal to the engine.

Internal rattles echo within the block and are difficult to isolate. If you have 4WD then the balance shaft chain could be rattling. It is located low in front on the passenger side.

The engine only has to be removed to replace the rear cassette. However, with 4WD it is difficult to replace the balance shaft tensioner since the block girdle (upper oil pan) must be removed.

ok. well i wasnt sure maybe it was left from standing in front looking @ the engine. well the guy i had look @ it used a stethascope to listen & he said it is definetly coming from the front passenger side. i will try to take off the belt & try it so see if it still does it.

could be the jack shaft tentioner, that is on the passenger front.
