My explorer started missfiring and choking and sometimes even stpoping at idle. I checked my IACV, the PCV valve and even replaced my MAF. No change. When I drive it is fine, but when I am in idle it misses. Also, when I remove the connection to the MAF, the ping dissapears, but the RPM is high.
Finally, I took it for a diagnostic test and that came back with
1. 157 : MAF signal too low
2. 172 EGO not switching, Lean EXH Bank1
3. No EGO (HO2 S-1), SW-Lean EXH Bank 2

Now the repair shop thinks I got a faulty MAF from Autozone. They think that my O2 sensors are giving the readings because of the bad MAF.

1. Could it be my spark plugs ? (This theory is lost becuase when I remove the connection to the MAF the engine does not ping. maybe because it gets too mucg GAS that it just AVOIDS the problem, not FIX it)

2. Could it be my EGR valve ? I have not checked this.

I am lost. Before I take it to the dealer and spend $$$, Please help if possible. Email @ SampathPap@Yahoo.com

Did you replace the entire MAS or just the little sensor component? If you just replaced the electronics and not the housing then it may just be really dirty.

And have you thought about replacing the actual O2 sensors?

I wouldn't suspect the o2 sensors, as a low flow condition at the MAF will cause the engine to lean itself out and set the o2 codes. I wouls say its in the sensor. Just some FYI: avoid any electronic component sold by AutoZone. They are very poorly designed and are made from very low grade materials. This leads to poor operating products.

I did replace it with a new MAF from O'rielly...same problem. Could the spark plugs cause this ? But then why would it work when I remove the connection from the MAF ?
I will look at the O2 sensors option.
