2000 Explorer, 4.0L EFI-OHV with 140k. Very rough running, CEL on and poor acceleration.
1) replaced spark plug wires and 3 year old Bosch plugs with new bosch plugs (I know, I know....bosch aren't good for Fords). On two of 6 plugs, the lower electrode and insulators were totally GONE!
2) Ran fine...no roughness or acceleration problems and CEL gone.
3) next day, rough running and poor acceleration but no CEL light. Autozone pulls up no codes.
4) pour in a bottle of fuel system cleaner and some high test gas and take it out on the open road.
5) take it to get emissions test...it passes and just after the pass certificate gets printed THANKFULLY the CEL comes back on.
Anyone have any ideas from these symptoms what the problem/next steps might be since I won't be able to get back to autozone to get codes read til next weekend?
Also, anyone have any thoughts on what would cause 2 plugs to have their electrodes/insulators just disappear and how much harm they did to my engine?
thanks much,
