I have a 98 xlt 4x4 4.0 SOHC. When I go up a steep hill or stomp on the gas, I get a few jerks. Kind of like my explorer has the hiccups. No one can tell me what causes this. Can anyone help ?

could be any number of things.....

first off, whats the general condition of the vehicle, has general maintenance been done? how is the iac, and the maf?

I have only had the truck for 2 month. It appears to have been garaged and took care of.

My truck was doing this, and I was afraid that it was a problem in the transmission. My scan tool did not show anything for the trans, but I found out that it was misfiring slightly when climbing hills (esp with my trailer) or accelerating on flat ground. I was able to trace it to high resistance in the coil pack.

I would start with new plugs and checking the ignition wires.

Check this thread for testing the coil pack:

Thanks for the info. They probably need replacing anyway(the plugs). At least I have a place to start.
