Please Help!!!!!!!!

I need help. Last saturday my truck died right in front of Napa and was just done:(:thumbdwn:. I've replaced the battery and the solenoid but still nuthin. When I turn the key I just hear a click from under the hood on the passenger side. My dad says its probably the starter and I think the wires to the battery might be corroded so its not getting enough juice. This normally wouldn't be such a big deal to get it running right away but I'm planning on getting my license next thursday and would like to take the test in my truck so I'm more comfortable. I just don't feel like buying a bunch of parts that don't need to be replaced if they aren't broken. If anyone has any idea whats wrong with my truck please let me know. Thanks

If you think the battery cables are corroded, they probably are. The neg cable especially, has a habit of corroding from the inside. You will be much happier in the long run if you replace them both at the same time.

Those cables corrode from the inside, and you often can't see it, or can only see a small amount of the real damage.

You could try to replace just the terminal, cutting away any corroded cable, but that's usually just a short-term fix.

The positive cable is very long and can cost around $70. The negative cable is more reasonable.

Yup, you can't go wrong replacing the cables, but your problem could still be a bad starter. Pull it and bring it in for testing.
 






I agree with the battery cable as a likely cause, but in my experience, the positive cable is usually the one that corrodes from the inside. I assume it has to do with the cable routing underneath the vehicle.

I've had my 91 explorer since 93 and I've changed the positive cable 3 times and the negative only once.
 






thanks I didn't realize those cables would be so expensive. My dads going to try smacking the starter with a BFH :hammer:. I guess this used to happen on his old ford and that would solve the problem, but I'll probably just replace it or test it just to make sure
 






The hammer on the starter has worked for me a few times, but geez, don't let him use a BFH, a regular H would be fine. I used a pair of vise grips, and just tapped the case while someone turned the key.
If that does, work, you know you need a new starter. ;)
 






Ok my truck is up and running. Thank you for helping me find the problem everyone. It turned out to be the solenoid on the starter, so I just bought a whole new starter with the solenoid. In the future I will be replacing the wires just in case.

banging on the gear reduction starter isnt a good idea. it some times breaks the magents inside the starter adding to the no start problem.the old high torque starter is ok with a tapping while the key is turned.
 






i always drill a burb hole in my t-stats. releaves the pressure in the motor if for some reason it fails to open up.if it has that lil burp plug on there i cut that off.
