Today when I started my 1994 ford explorer 4wd I hears a noise under the hood while I was idling, then when I accelerated the noise pitched up with the acceleration. The best way I can describe this sound would be a crotch rocket motorcycle (not a harley) in the distance. kind of a whinny motor noise....checked the fluids everything was fine. checked to see if anything was rubbing, nothing was rubbing. the sound seems to become from around the alternator area..but doesn't sound like it's the alternator it's self...I'm so stumped..please help????????????

Might be the serpentine belt tensioner. They will get really noisy just before they fail. About a $45 - 50 part at Napa, IIRC. You can verify by using a mechanic's stethoscope (or a rubber hose as a substitute) and listening for the noise at the idler pulley.

i would say its the idle air control (iac). look at this thread,

or search iac valve.

I agree with The IAC making the noise. One of the explorers we had in the past had one which was making more of a howling noise which would change in volume. It has a black round plastic piece on it and when I would twist it the sould would either change or go away. We removed it , cleaned it with a spray, re installed and the sound went away.

My experience is that the IAC howling noise occurs at idle and goes away as you open the throttle.

well got the problem fixed...ended up being the idler pulley. the bearings had seized up..replaced it for $20 no more noise
