my 95 xlt has the basic ford tape deck. lately the speakers have been making a low popping noise like someone plucking a microphone. it seems to be random, but i notice it more when im playing tapes. the speakers sound fine other than the noise but could they be blown? i plan on upgrading the speakers but if i need to replace the stereo then ill do that first. i dont have enough dough after engine mods to replace both. is there a way that i can test the radio or the speakers? any advice would be aprreciatted.

I don't know a lot about sound problems but I would like to offer everything I have. Be aware that these e simply my best guess. First of all I don't think the speakers are blown because I have heard blown speakers and they cannot be described as "sounding fine" in any way. The problem then could either be a damaged speaker, bad tapes, or something with the head unit. First I would try cleaning the player with a head cleaning tape. If thats not it, test each of the speakers using the Fade and Balance control to use listen to each speaker and see if a certain one or two only cause the problem. Other than that the actual magnetic head in the player could be damamged and may need to be replaced. I would suggest replacing the unit if this is the problem or anyways if you have the money. By the way, I am about to replace the head unit on my '95 XLT with an aftermarket CD player and might be able to sell if you want to go that route. Hope I could help.

thanks for the info. i think that it is the head. i checked the speakers like you said and it seems that the front channells are bad. i pulled out the speakers, which was harder than i thought, and hooked them to my home stereo. they sounded fine. i think that i am just going to use this as an excuse to get a premium cd player installed.

are you going to do the work yourself when you change your stereo? i have changed many stereos before, but the explorer system seems to be in accesable. do you need special tools or should i just have it done at a shop?
