Random Noise from speakers?

Sometimes, at random times, the system in my Explorer emits short bursts of static. The noise can come from any of the speakers, and still occurs no matter how I set the bass or treble. I have the factory JBL premium system. Has this happened to anyone? Any Ideas?

Thanks

Does it come through all the speakers, or is it just the fronts and rears, or is it just the sub? Does it just happen when listening to the radio, or no matter whether you're listening to the radio or cassette/CD? If it occurs no matter what, it's probably one of your amps. If it occurs only when listening to the radio, or only when listening to a cassette or CD, then it's probably your head unit. My guess is that there's a short somewhere, either internally in your amp of possibly in the signal cables or ground wire.

it comes on while listening to cds, and comes through the speakers never the subs. do you think it could be my cd player? I thought it was the speakers at first cause it only happened on certain notes on certain songs, but after paying close attention, its very widespread. I hope this can help somebody pinpoint the problem, i'd love to take care of it before I go off to school in a couple of weeks. Thanks for your help

Help has arrived!

OK- I had this problem as well, and nipped it in the bud! Hopefully, the same thing is what's wrong with yours- here's what the problem was: With the JBL soundsystem, they use an inter-connecting piece which connects the wires of the head unit (radio) to the speaker/amplifier wires in the car. This piece is made of plastic, and frankly isn't very durable. The way they mount it, is by an attatched clip which securely sticks it to the frame just inside the lower dash right above the left side of the transmission/centerconsole hump (roughly in the dash on the left of the ashtray). This is actaully a bad idea since driving induces a plethora of jolts, vibrations, and bumps. What had happened with mine was the speaker wires had actually began to vibrate loose from the connector, which at times would generate the static you are talking about in the speakers. What the static itself is, is the wires repeatedly for a split second coming out of/going into contact with it's connection (if you can make sense of that sentence! :) What I did was firmly press all the wires in the connector and then fully envelope the connector and about 1" of the wiring on both sides with electrical tape. That prevented the wires for vibarating around in there causing the static. The static never returned. This was in a '93 Explorer, so I'm not positive if the location of the connector will be the same, but I think it should. If you find some connectors and are not sure if it's the right one, turn your radio on and jiggle/pull/push the wires coming out of the connectors you find. Whichever one causes that static is the one you need to put the electrical tape on. I hope this helps.

Does anyone know off the top of their heads the location of these connectors in my 96? Thanks.
