Popping sound and waterpump

I put on a cheap Advance Auto water pump. It works fine except the engine makes a popping sound inside the metal tube from the top radiator hose. I read once on this site that the only fix is a water bypass kit, that Ford no longer makes or a Motorcraft waterpump. Has this information changed at all? Does a Gates or Boush waterpump cause the popping? Any new information would be great.

Is the metal tube you're referring to the water neck? It is painted gray from the factory, has a slight bend in it, and bolts to the lower intake manifold with 3 bolts (sandwiching the thermostat in between).

Also can you describe the noise further? You may want to confirm the noise's origin by using a mechanic's stethoscope, or at least a screwdriver held to your ear that is touched on different spots.

I did confirm its location with a stethoscope and it is in that tube. There was a posting from long back that said on motors where this occurs Ford made a fix kit that basically routed a hose from the water temperature sensor on the intake down to the lower radiator hose. This stopped the problem. Then later they redisigned the waterpump to handle it so that this kit wasn't necessary. The post later went on to state that the only fix was the Motorcraft waterpump. I just want to know if this is still true or if a Boush or Gates or some pump like that would also handle it.
