I did a search for this topic and came up with nothing. Hope there is no other thread like this. If there is tell me! Thanks! Anyways.....I'm thinking of putting dual exhaust under my 98 Explorer and just wondering whats out there and is it possible?? I looked under my truck and there is not MUCH room! Is this just a dream for me or can it be a reality someday??

This has been talked about A LOT on here. I'm sure someone will tell you to use the search option on this forum - but I will go ahead and tell you the deal. Explorers v6s run a Y-pipe off the exhaust manifolds and they do not break back out into two pipes; they stay as one. The problem is, there are converters up on the y-pipe that would be hard to relocate correctly to give you "true duals". The way that you may do it is by putting a muffler on that is a single inlet dual outlet set up (Flowmaster 40 series or 50) and run two pipes out that way. There is not a "kit" for this, so it would be custom made at a local muffler shop. Also, there really isn't much room on a stock/lowered explorer - so the biggest pipe you can run without problems is a 2.25" pipe. It can be "reality" - just take your explorer up to a shop and throw down anywhere from 350-500 and they will do it for ya. Good luck!

I think my 99 Limited V6 SOHC has two pipes leading to the muffler.
Yes, go to a muffler shop, and have them look at it. LOL,
Don

You have a mounty that is AWD and a v6? Are you sure it is a v6? I didn't know they made mountys with AWD and v6!

EDIT: I read the thing under your member name before i compared the two years. Sorry about that!

I find it hard to believe you searched and found no previous threads.

You'd find that true dual exhaust on a 4.0 either n/a or even supercharged is WAY overkill and will hurt you off the line. I had a TRUE dual exhaust from my headers to the rear of my Splash when I had the Vortech installed and it dropped my 60ft times by nearly .3-.4 seconds on average. I went back with a Y-pipe into a 3" muffler in and out and got back what I lost.

Also something to remember is the fual tank on the Explorer/Ranger is on the driver's frame rail so you couldn't do a straight shot. I relocated mine to the rear and used a Bronco 2 tank.

I thought it wouldn't sound good either but it wasn't that bad...

Either way I would never recommend it on a V6 of any type.

Later Doug.

If he just wants the look, he can do the math to find the right size for two pipes, and add tips that he likes. It would probably take around 1.875-2.0" pipes to equate to the aftermarket tailpipe that is available.

The big issue is the obstacles in the left rear around the rearend. Ford runs the brake line directly through the space that the tailpipe would need to go. LOL,

I had duals on the 96 X V6 and a Flowmaster 70 dual out muffler w/2" exhausts.
Same shop put a Y pipe just after the muffler on the Mounty and ran 2" duals.
Its very doable. You just have to find a shop that is willing to do a little extra bending.

I did do a search for dual exhaust on 98 Explorers and came out with people talking about other years. Besides that, I know its dual coming out of manifolds and i know i have dual converters and it flows into a Y into the muffler. I figured it would make my motor "breathe" better but you said it makes performance worse so thats all I needed to know! Thanks for all the input! I'm not really going for looks either. When it comes to mods in my vehicles there is a "performance" and security purpose. :)

Any info you find on Explorers from '91 to '01 is relavant to your situation. There really isn't that much difference, especially from '95 to '01.

I have dual chamber 2 flowmasters on my 01 Sport

I dunno what series I have but I love the sound it sounds real deep and loud.
