Possible Oil Leak

i'd remove the filter and inspect both surfaces for any defects, dirt/debris, or anything that might be causing an improper seal.. if the filter is still new then re-install it after pulling it out.. i cant tell you how much oil you'll lose but just be prepared and go ahed and buy a few quarts..

when you get that filter off, clean the surface really well and inspect..
It is likely that you will lose at least a quart of oil by removing the filter. It is highly unusual that you would need to tighten the filter with a wrench. Overtightening will make the next removal a real bear. I have never had to tighten the filter on my OHV 4.0 more than I can get it with my gloved hand. That turns out to be about 1/4 to 1/2 turn past the gasket contacting the base.

there you go, have atleast 2 quarts prepared..

just make sure to inspect thoroughly...

Leave it parked overnight and do it cold and you won't lose a drop. Spin the filter off, and odds are it'll be dry. When I can jack it up and leave it on a Friday night, then change it Saturday, I never make a mess.

In your case, however, it won't matter. The oil is coming from between the adapter housing and the block. I have yet to figure out a way to tighten mine down as the exhaust manifold gets in the way from pretty much any angle I can figure out to get on it. I suppose that the proper size stubby metric box wrench *might* do it, but I couldn't figure out how.

Mine's been oozing for a couple years now... I gave up trying to make it better.

I have the same problem. My oil leak started when i was putting my exhaust back together. Thats also when my lifters started tappin on startup and when i thrash on my truck. I supose its prolly affecting my oil pressure just enough to have my lifters make noise. I was told to replace the o ring or gasket between the oil filter adapter housing and block, but i dont know which one i need to get. any comments?
