It is likely that you will lose at least a quart of oil by removing the filter. It is highly unusual that you would need to tighten the filter with a wrench. Overtightening will make the next removal a real bear. I have never had to tighten the filter on my OHV 4.0 more than I can get it with my gloved hand. That turns out to be about 1/4 to 1/2 turn past the gasket contacting the base.i'd remove the filter and inspect both surfaces for any defects, dirt/debris, or anything that might be causing an improper seal.. if the filter is still new then re-install it after pulling it out.. i cant tell you how much oil you'll lose but just be prepared and go ahed and buy a few quarts..
when you get that filter off, clean the surface really well and inspect..
