2017 Explorer Platinum
Hey guys, first time poster here. My wife and I are in the process of buying a new 2017 Ford Explorer and we are heavily leaning towards to the Platinum. In fact, we're hoping we can make a deal next week. I was really wanting the 3.5L EcoBoost engine, but the wife really did not like the sporty look of the Sport so we did what any rational couple would do and compromised on the Platinum :)

1. I've seen that the Platinum has noise dampening or abatement above and beyond the other trim levels. Is that correct?

2. I've seen vague references to the control system for the EcoBoost "learning" or tuning itself to the behavior of the vehicle or driver. Anyone have any information about this? I have a suspicion, based on nothing but an educated hunch, that this probably has more to do with the vehicle than the driver. What kind of parameters are being "learned"?

3. Has anyone been successful in negotiating a lower rate on the Ford ESP when buying? I know I can get them at Flood Ford, Anderson & Koch, etc. But, if we can could get the dealer to price match it'd be more convenient for us.

1) Yes
2) The vehicle learns your driving habits and adjusts to them. Mainly shift points with transmission learning
3) why is it more convenient? All these discount online dealers require you to plug in your info with your credit card and purchase it. A very easy process. Why reward a dealer who is trying to make a ridiculous profit with huge mark ups when you have dealers who are upfront and give a fantastic price? Whether it be the ones you mentioned or my contact who have had dozens of people on here buy from ($100 over cost).

Sorry but I'm not one that will say X dealer is giving me this, will you match it. Give me a great price upfront or you don't get my business. I'm not into playing games and I like upfront honesty.

Beginning with the 2016 model, the Manual no longer mentions Transmission Adaptive Learning. The only reference to Adaptive Learning is this;

Adaptive Learning
The electronic power steering system adaptive learning helps correct road irregularities and improves overall handling and steering feel. It communicates with the brake system to help operate advanced stability control and accident avoidance systems. Additionally, whenever the battery is disconnected or a new battery installed, you must drive your vehicle a short distance before the system relearns the strategy and reactivates all systems.

Welcome to the Forum.
I just came from a 2014 Lincoln MKT and honestly prefer the 2017 Platinum I have now. As for buying an ESP, I bought mine from the dealer as I have done before but you might want to check out the following thread; http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/index.php?threads/ford-extended-service-plans.323161/
You can also access/download the 2017 Owner's Manual here; https://owner.ford.com/tools/account/how-tos/owner-manuals.html
The 'Search' feature at the top right can also be very useful.

Thanks guys. We'll probably get the ESP from one of the online retailers.

I downloaded the manual and read through most of it.

This vehicle will be a big difference from what we currently have...2012 Escape Hybrid and 2015 Fusion Energi. The Escape is our family ride and we decided it just wasn't big enough.

My contact is the cheapest and he will even waive the finance charge so you can finance it for 18 or 24 months with 0% interest. If you decide to get one, PM me and I'll pass you his phone number. Contract will be sent to you via PDF and is in the Ford system the next day.

I have have a very good relationship with my local dealer. I've purchased 4 vehicles from them in the last 6 years. The first 2 ESP's they matched the online price, the last two have been $100 over their cost. Giving them more business has afforded me more perks with them. If I didn't have a good dealer I would handle it like blwnsmoke does.

That's encouraging. I suppose it doesn't hurt to at least ask if they'll price match. We have a pretty good relationship with our dealer as well. This will be our 4th car from them. We've never done an ESP though, but the Platinum has so much stuff that it almost seems like a no brainer this time.

We have our new 2017 Explorer Platinum...just got it today. My wife loves the fact that Sync 3 will work together with the Pandora app on her phone. We had no idea it could do that.

We were not able to negotiate the Ford ESP price down very much. It was $400 more than what I see online. Obviously we passed and will probably get it from Flood Ford in the next couple of days.

Very, very nice. If you're getting an ESP I urge you to follow through on post #6 first before signing any contract. Also, I think your profile needs updating. :)
