I need to pick between two subwoofers.
The amp I have will provide an actual 550 RMS @ 2ohm 14.4V.

#1

120 oz. Double Stacked Strontium Magnets
Power Handling: 600 watts R.M.S.
Frequency Response: 23Hz-500Hz
Efficiency: 91.1 dB
PHAT 2" Foam Surround
Non- Pressed, Non-Transfer Paper Cone
KM3' Coated for Virtually No Cone Distortion
2.5" 4-Layer ASV Voice Coil

#2

120 oz. Double Stacked Strontium Magnets
Power Handling: 800 watts R.M.S.
Frequency Response: 20Hz – 500Hz
Efficiency: 95.6dB
PHAT 1.75 Inch EPDM Rubber Surround
Spun Aluminum Cone
3 Inch 4-Layer ASV Voice Coil Dual 6 Ohm

My problem is #2 can only be run at 3 ohm, While it is the 'Better' subwoofer will it still hit as hard as #1? Which one would you pick? There is no price difference.

Going by numbers posted, #2 is going to to be ~2-3db "louder" because it is more efficient, even though it is going to receive less power from the amp due to the 3 ohm load.
However, I would be much more concerned with how each of the subs sounds. They will likely sound drastically different since one is a paper cone and the other is aluminum. They also may require different size boxes to tune either sub properly.

Duh, 1 ohm

:D

I think I might go with #2, and just get the biggest amp alpine has to offer....

MRD-1001! OMGWTFBOOM... you only live once right?

• 1000W x 1 RMS (2ohm;@14.4V 1% THD+N) :bounce:

i think you will blow number two you won't be running enough rms into it, you'll be running about 370 rms at 3 ohms. Underpowering a sub is worse than overpowering it. The sub will think it has the power to hit a note and then will just bottom out. The sensitivity is overrated. To many people buy a speaker on that spec alone. Just becuase the sensitivity is higher does not mean it will be a better sub. Do some searching on the subject and you;ll see what i mean.

well the foam surround tends to deteriorate over time, while the rubber surround seems to lose its strength over time(depending on what type of music)

i dont seem to see an "Xmax" for the subs

but based on your amp... option one would be the best... youd be running close to what it needs for its full potential...

the 'bahn alum series (#2) has better build quality than the other one you mentioned...

I decided to go balls out for sure..

I'm buying the biggest amplifier alpine has to offer...

This should give #2.. 750 Watts RMS which sould be plenty.

lol if your going to get a bigger amp, why not get a better sub while your at it? (just a thought)

Becuase this is what will fit in my enclosure with it's 5.5' mounting depth (Q-Logic stealth) it's getting the correct power to it. It's perfect.

Ok folks I've made the order:

Streetwires PS04BSI 4-Guage Wiring Harness: $57.95
Audiobahn ALUM10Q 10" 800 W Sound Q Subwoofer : $99.99
Alpine MRD-M1001 V12 Mono Power Amplifier : $449.99

Total (w/o Shipping) $607.93.

It goes along to compliment the Q-Logic Stealth box, Alpine head unit and mid's.

This should be the loudest and best sounding 10" setup around here :)

it's here :) the sub doesn't fit as the box buldges out and contacts a arm on the basket.. so I'll have to do some creative metal work on it.

ummm I'd do work/modifications on the box before the sub.. at least that's the impression I got from "metalwork".

Well look at my box, theres nothing I can do to it... and the reason It wont fit is a cosmetic peice on the sub basket.

what about the box is hitting the cosmetic part on the sub, are you talking depth or size of the hole? It'd be easy to "tweak" the sub hole, its probably only particle board or maybe mdf w/ carpet over it? But it's your sub, and the setup looks hella nice!

it's actually a custom molded ABS plastic shell with some sort of internal card-board type stuff. So I can't modify the box at all or it won't fit in the side panel.

I finally got the damn sub in that box, for future reference if anyone buys this box.. don't even try getting this sub.

It requiered A. Hacksaw, B. File., C. Black & Decker Mouse.

I had to cut one of the arms off the sub, but it will be fine. And the hole for sub was insanely too small. Alot of filing and sanding went on today.
