My problem was my power mirrors wouldn't operate in the right direction and sometimes give issues in other directions as well. On a long list of minor repairs (that I let go unchecked for to long which therefore kept getting longer), this was up next. I had already ruled out a broken wire in the drivers door jam boot, from a previous to-do fix (thanks ncranchero) which then directed me to the switch, for my power mirror problem. At this point, I should of checked with a multi-meter but I haven't learned how to read nor use one just yet (also on a learn to-do list). A replacement cost $35 and if I can tackle the overhead console display fix then I can try and do the same here. So I decided to see how much I could dismantle the switch to take a look around. I decided to pop the switch out of the door panel installed rather than to remove the door panel, either way the switch needs to be popped out (this just saved a step). I opened it up and it did look like the contacts were dirty and corroded so I sprayed it down with crc electronic cleaner, used a cotton swab and toothpick for the tough spots (be gentle on pressure), let dry and hooked it back up. Now I have all directional controls, although I have to put a bit more pressure than I assume you would have to on a new switch but I suspect the contact tabs have slightly bent from usage (if you open it up, play with how it functions and you will see what I mean). So when the problem happens again, I'll try to bend the contacts slightly to avoid buying a new switch.
After I fixed it I did find a good thread/post where ncranchero explains how to check with a multi-meter and problem solve the power mirrors further if this doesn't solve your problem http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=259077&highlight=Power+mirror+switch
The contacts on the right half of my switch (with pins to harness side) was the side that was dirty/corroded but I cleaned it all since I had it open
You don't really need to pull apart the right half in the picture (pin the harness side)
