Power mirrors not working

Ok, so this past winter my power mirrors worked just fine. Then my brother had to borrow the truck for a little while after he put his taurus in a ditch (front wheel drive car doesnt like 3ft of snow in a ditch) and he had to re-adjust the mirrors for his driving. After I got it back they worked fine. Now this summer when the taurus was having constant break downs (piece of junk car) he told me the mirrors wont work. Ive checked all the fuses and the switch seems fine (my dad got his volt meter and checked it out). And the motors for the mirrors arent making any weird grinding noises like they are bad.

Any suggestions??

i had the same problem mine didnt work on either side so i pulled the switch out and unplugged it and put it back works now,

But ive already pulled the switch out to test it and put it back in. I'm thinking it could be something with the wiring possibly. Plus I'm trying to figure out if it is something cheap and easy to fix because a replacement switch is like 40 bucks.

Here is the wiring diagram, maybe it'll help. Are you getting power to the mirror switch on the OG/LG wire? No, if it's not a fuse it'll be a broken wire in the door to cab boot.

Awesome, thank you ncranchero. And I am by no means an electronic saavy person, thats my dads thing so I will have him take a look at that and see. And yes I do think it could be a wire because it was just working then it wasnt. Thanks again.

my for sport trac 2001 power mirror switch is bad too, need a good replacement, is there a better one out there which does not fail so easy? please post part number, my old one is F57B-17B676-AB

If you can hear the motors then your problem is going to be on the threads that are turned by the motor to push and pull the mirror. There are 2 motors per mirror and they drive 2 nylon nuts. On the back of your mirror there are 2 plastic threads that have a ball joint end. The other side is split and held open with a metal clip. This side is also threaded on the outside and runs in and out of the nylon nuts. They are prone to strip. To get to them, you have to gently pry the mirror and cut the glue behind it. There is a philips screw behind it and the rest is self explanitory.

my switch was bad, some corrosion on the contacts, took it apart cleaned and put some solder on the bad connections and its OK now.
