hey FoxxRocket, you say your tach is showing 3k @ 65mph? at 65 mph my tach says about 2k and I have the same diff gears as you do and 235 tires (15 in rim). Maybe you're missing overdrive?
Foxxrocket,
I am also new to the Ex, 93', and it took a little getting used to the Ex's shifting and response. It sounds normal on the "lack of response" when in OD, the manual actually says to floor it when you want to downshift from OD when passing/ accelerating. Now since you said that you have to floor it to get it up to 65-75 it'd burning up a lot of gas. I've just accepted the slower acceleration so as to not burn up so much gas.The truck will gain cruising speed but just at a much slower rate,at least that's what I've noticed. I get about 16mpg.Around town I leave it in D for a little more pep.
Thanks,, smash,, I think that is what im gonna do,,,
Thanks for the reassurance bro,, you know how it is when you get a new used vehicle,,,,,just waiting for it to blow up,,lol,,,,,,
What does this mean? When I'm at a light then I totally gas it, the motor dives and sticks around 1-1.5k, then finally takes off and has plenty of power. What is this? Is it normal? (its manual by the way) I'm not dropping the clutch, just gassing it and lettin' it out.
already changed the fuel filter a month ago. How would it be a timing problem? Like the cylinders aren't firing in good sequence or something? It gets plenty of pick-up right after it defeats the initial "getting the momentum going" thing. I wonder if it could be that darn mas... Maybe I'll check that out tonight. Any other ideas?
BTW, I have this stp crap injector cleaner stuff that my friend jacked from his work. Do you think this would do anything at all? Not necessarily for this problem, but maybe helping out my rough idle too?
Foxxrocket, it sounds like you do have a problem. 13 MPG in a stock explorer is unacceptable. It may just need a tuneup. Plugs, wires, FI cleaner, can of seafoam, intake cleaning, maf cleaning. Air filter and fuel filter.
Do that stuff and get back to us. With 3.73 gears you should have no problem in the city. On the highway, you should be ok too unless you like to drive really fast.
Thanks Jason!,, Can you tell me about the MPG I am shooting for with this explorer?...
I currently have a 50 Mile drive to work one way right now,, and the gas mileage is killing me....
THanks alot jason,, ill do that and get back with you guys,,

im in the same boat with you foxxrocket, i get 13mpg on my 93' on a good day. ive tried everything imaginable and still nothing hopefully you'll have better luck though!
foxxrocket...when i purchased my X a few months ago, i had the same issue with the vehicle being really sluggish off the line. i've replaced my air filter, pcv valve, cleaned MAF, check plugs and wires...still sluggish. as of now, i've just accepted the fact that it'll never change. but the only thing is that when i was test driving other X's (particularly a 92 XLT 4x2) it had great acceleration. i don't know if it just has to do with the fact that we have 4x4 or what (btw...i also have a 92 XLT 4x4 on 235's). anyway, let me know if you find out anything different about our situation. oh, i get around 16-18mpg right now. i think cleaning the MAF helped me the most so far as far as gas milage goes.
Hey Foxx,
I forgot to mention in my post; the MAF( which has been mentioned by others). I've noticed that the MAF is the "tastebud" of the EX and if it doesn't like what goes by, it sends a message to the brain to throw-up, spit or swallow and feel sh..y all day! My Ex did what yours sounds like the other day and I noticed that the MAF sensor connection had backed out of it's harness due to a broken clip. Zip tied it back and all was well.
