The power drivers seat in my 2002 eddie bauer explorer is not working in the forward and back directions. It is working in the up and down directions. I have checked with a couple repair shops who could not or would not work on the problem. Their recommendation was to purchase a new unit for about $850 plus labor. I cannot afford to do that . Any reccommendations on repairing the mechanism or possibly converting to a manual seat in place of the power seat?

The horizontal drives on those seat tracks are relatively robust if it is the design that I am thinking of. How much troubleshooting can you do? I would first test the switch for continuity when you press the button(s). Next guess would be the horizontal drive motor which is mounted in a tri-pack configuration. Either way I highly doubt you will need to replace the entire seat track.

Let me further clarify the problem. The seat will move only an inch or so in the forward /back directions. I was able to reach under the seat and found that the outside drive screw would turn but the inside drive screw( nearest to the console) does not turn. Without removing the seat I cannot tell if the drive screw is jammed or whatever. As best that I can tell the motors are working. Does this help any in figuring out the problem?

Let me further clarify the problem with the seat. The seat will move maybe a 1/2 inch or so forward and back. I reached under the seat and found that the drive screw on the right (towards the console) was not turning while the drive on the left was. Without removing the seat I could not tell if the drive screw is jammed or whatever. The other power functions of the seat (tilt and up/down ) work ok. Does this help any with what the problem is?

Could be the flex shaft going to the LH horizontal actuator is broken. Both horizontal actuators run off of the same motor. So if the motor does appear to be working then that is what I would look at. I would take the seat out to see what you can see. Probably what is happening is the RH actuator is working properly, but it can only move the track so far before binding because the LH actuator is not doing its job.

I think the flex shafts on those tracks are in clear/greenish tint plastic tubing. You might be able to see the condition of the flex shaft without taking anything apart.
