If a power steering pump were to go out, is that a severe enough problem to leave you stranded on the side of the road, or could you drive the vehicle long enough to get it to someone who can fix it?

Also, are there sensors in the power steering pump that would trigger a check engine light to indicate that the pump was close to going out?

If it is just the pump going out (i.e. lack of pressure from the pump), you would still be able to steer the truck but the effort would go way up. It would be especially noticeable during low speed turns, not as noticeable at speed.

If something else broke, or if something got jammed in the rack, then it might leave you stranded.

I don't believe that a problem with the power steering would light up the CEL.
