Welcome from Colorado country! Has anyone experienced a scraping sound when turning the wheel and also no power steering at all at times, luckily when starting up and not moving? Mechanics are saying $2700 to fix and has nothing to do with EPAS Sensor recall. Is this a common defect of am I the only one with a lemon. Thx!

Welcome to the Forum.
Is the noise coming from the steering column or the front end? There are existing threads on both that the 'Search' feature can find. Here is one;Squeaking or moaning when turning left or right
As for the steering issue, the only common problem is with the steering rack; 2011 - 2015 Explorer Power Steering Issue

Did you ever get the recall notice or have you checked for outstanding recalls on your Explorer?
What did the mechanic say was the problem?

P,
It was a scraping sound when the wheel was turned in any direction. The mechanic said the steering gear was going bad and needed to be replaced along with front strut bearings. He said it had nothing to do with the recalled EPAS Sensor. That was a dealer. I took it to a different mechanic for a second opinion today. When I started it, I had no alerts. I also had no steering whatsoever. I restarted it a few times and wiggled the wheel and I was able to drive it to second opinion guy. Haven't heard back. I love the car and ride but this is definitely defective stuff that I shouldn't have to pay for after 115000 miles. Originally being from Michigan and always standing up for automakers, especially Ford who didn't take the bailout, this could be final straw.. I've done more research since my original post and it looks like steering issues have been common, along with paint bubbling and peeling on aluminum panels. No more Ford's for me or anyone within shouting distance. Shame on them. Good luck with yours is all I can say.

Hello, I have 2013 explorer xlt 131000 miles. last week steering started making a scrapping sound took it to a mechnic that was recommend from a friend. I was told electronic steering rack was going bad. I purchased a remanufactured one from cardone and they put it in and perfrom a wheel alignment . I pick up the explorer yesterday, started making my way home and notice steering was a little tight and the automatic steering return was not coming back all the way. Suddenly i had warning lights come on, red power sterring service now .adv trac service and terrain failure . Steering Wheel is hard as a rock i have to wait for monday to do anything just wanted some advise on how to proceed.

Thank u. I was planning on doing that. I read that units have to be reprogrammed by ford software to specfic vechile..

Yes, the rack has to be programmed when replaced. Hopefully the reman isn't a faulty unit.

i'm going have the mechnic change it out then go right to dealer to have reprogrammed. They gave me a 1 year gurantee on part so better safe then sorry. Thank to u guy's at the forum

There has only been a couple of people who have discussed a reman unit. Do you mind me asking what you paid for the reman and what your labor cost was?

Well the job was 275 with wheel alignment and the part i got it at cost 650.00 ut usually 778.00 the shop was atlas auto in the bronx. These guys are pretty decent as far as labor.atlas auto bronx ny

Also it' about 2.1/2 hour job plus what ever the programming will be.

So $650 for a reman or $678 for a new OEM unit with 2yr/unlimited mile warranty. May want to think about going OEM.

Ford Gear Assembly - Steering EB5Z-3504-S | Auto Nation Ford White Bear Lake

This is the one without the auto park (parallel parking) which I dont believe the XLT has.

The price i got it for was cost to auto supply guy which is a family friend. Part was about 778.00 that was his normal price also it's auto zone's price for a reman. I have seen them on internet for as low as 610.00

My point is, why pay $650 for a reman when you can buy a brand new one for $28 more with twice the warranty.

I see your point. I was told these were all remans and new was 1200.

Retail is $1,113 but there are many online dealers that sell close to cost. The link I gave you above sells at 10% above cost.

I worked for an aftermarket auto supplier for years. We had a few reman product lines from 3rd party reman companies. If you could have seen the reman process, you would likely never buy another reman auto part again. Most of the time it was a bunch of hacks just cleaning parts, repainting them and boxing them up to ship out. On the rare occasion things were "reman'd", it usually involved just swapping parts among a bunch of assemblies until they could make one work, then a quick clean, paint, and then box it up to ship.

That was 20 years ago and I doubt it got any better. Friends don't let friends buy cardone...

Wowi should just got a new one i wish i would have clink the linkthey are installing the rack today i'm praying it works out. I will never buy reman again thank u for all the info
