My ps pump failed today, and i need a new one, what do i need to buy in order to do this myself, and how much should it run me?

Join the Elite Explorers for $20 each year or try it out for $5 a month.

I dont remember the cost but where ever you get it, I got mine at AutoZone, make sure you can rent/borrow the pully puller for changing your old pully to the new pump. It takes a special tool.
Probably in the $60 range.
Might also invest in a Haynes manual at the same time.

Go to the "resources" page here and click on "explorer maintainence" that site has a page on the PS pump replacement with VERY important advice.. a MUST READ if you are going to do it yourself.

Happy Exploring

yeah I changed out my PS pump three times, got a $20 tool from autozone to pull the pulley. I've also done two other ps pumps in early explorers so I have experience :). Best way to do it is to remove the pulley while the ps pump is still in the vehicle, then once pulley is removed remove the ps pump. It will save you tons of time and hassle, the pulley has to be removed be hand and it is torqued on like crazy!

Also, be very sure on how to bleed the pump before you start the X up. If not mistaken, the BEST way is to put the X on front jackstands and turn the wheel almost lock to lock with the ignition OFF to remove any air in there.

Trust me, the above method may not be exactly correct but find out the correct bleed procedure or your pump will sing forever and it sux.

thanks guys, i replaced the pump, only to find out that after one day, my original pulley was stripped off of the hub. after i got a new pulley, it worked like a charm. another problem solved. once again, thanks
