Hey, my power steering pump is leaking fluid pretty well. I think I may have to replace it, but am wondering if anyone has ever replaced the seals on a pump for a cheaper fix. Would this solve my problem? Help is appreciated!:redexp:

Good luck replacing the seals. The fords are a bear. I have done both and would recomend replacing the pump, not that expensive; besides you get a warranty with a new pump.

I rebuilt mine and had no problems with it. The seal pack is about $25 at discount auto. I also did the job with 1 hand as I had just had shoulder surgery and was in a sling - no leaks since.

Is the leak coming from the bottom seal? If so, it is simple to change, but you do need to drop the gear box to change them...

I went to the junkyard and bought a new pump. It had a 10 day warrenty. It came out of a 94 Mustang, so far I have not had one problem. I paid $25 for it. :D

Thanks for all the replies! Could anyone tell me which Fords have pumps comaptible with the Explorer? Thanks again! :redexp:

one more thing ...

One more thing I forgot to add, the leak seems to be covering the serp. belt; does this mean that it is probably the "rotor seals" that are gone? Any way to tell for sure which one(s) are leaking? The problem started after I had a breakdown in the the middle of nowhere and had to get a tow to a service station to put a new alternator on. I think the P.S. pulley may have gotten knocked around, or maybe the pump itself as they replaced a couple wires near there as well. Thanks!
