id like to know also i have to do the same thing , mine is whining loudly ... what causes whining,,,, i have replaced the p/s fluid once before and it sill makes noise , or do i need to replace the pump at all ?

Did you guys ever find a solution? Mine is whining and it's annoying. Also, fred what part of boston are you from?

I don't remember where i read it(when i was doing research about putting P.S. on my 67 f-250) but in the old days the whine in the ford ps pumps were caused by "safety" feature that did not allow it to build up to much pressure. ie release valves, im sure that in the last 40 years the pump has changed some but still have to have something in there that lets fluid blow by if gets too much pressure i'd assume otherwise going to blow something out.

Here is an option have not tried it but might work have also heard of people using little bit of STP oil treatment, maybe some LUCAS power steering stop leak?? just trying to give you some ideas. This is from another Ford forum i check out occasionally.

Buy some Justice Brothers differential treatment additive in the green squeeze tube, warm up engine first, then squeeze 1/4 of the tube in the p/s pump while engine is running. Let the additive mix in the fluid for 2-3 minutes then work your steering back and forth for another 2-3 minutes.
Your whine should be gone shortly if not not now. I did this to my 1985 F150 in the fall of 2002 and the pump hasn't made any noise since.
This should take care of your problem.

pull the inner fender cover on the driver side and you'll see the pump. mine makes the same noise. waiting for catastrophic failure before i change it.
