Anyone have a Powertrax diff on a 2WD. THe little add says that it will "give a 2WD the grip of a 4WD!" I don't believe that for a second, but does it help, and how much. Also, how does it behave in regular driving? Thanks.

I would say it would help a lot, but not make it like a four wheel drive. Even when my four wheel drive is in two wheel drive the locker will encage and there has been times I haven't had to use 2 wheel because of the locker.
Hope this helps. As for on the road it works reall well I think. You do have to be careful in snow because the locker will turn both wheels and that makes the rear want to slide downhill even if you aren't on a very big hill.
I like mine and I have had it over a year.

I had this installed on my old 2wd 92 and also on my 2wd Sport Trac. You will love this locker. This locker did get me many places that other 2wd's could not go! Powertrax is the best locker in my book.

Are the powertrax loud when turning? Are these as effective as an airlocker? Do they hurt anything when turning?

You just learn to drive diff. w/ the Powertrax installed. You just let off the gas a bit when turning to keep it from engaging. Your lifted so you probably already do this. Get one. It was the best mod I have done to any of my lifted explorers.

How much and is it as easy to install as they claim?

It is real easy to install. I have done it so many times now I can install one in about 30 minutes. You will find them for about 390.00 to 410.00 I believe. I am fixing to buy another unit for my trail explorer. You wont regret buying a powertrax.

I was looking at them on www.summitracing.com. You have to know alot about your rear end to see what the price is going to be. Guess I have to do some rear end research first!

-------------------

OK we have an 8.8 in ring gear, 31 spline shaft, right?

At www.summitracing.com that one is part number PWT-1822 for the lock right. it is only $299.00.

Am I looking at the right one?

powertrax...hhmmmm! so i would by one that says ford 8.8? i have a 3.55 open diff with TT and shakels. am i correct?

If memory serves me they offer 2 diff kind of lockers. The better one is the one that is close to 400.00 dollars. I may be mistaken, or the price has come down.

www.powertrax.com

Summit racing shows 2 for the 8.8 31 spline rear end. (that is the right numbers on the rear, right?)

One is the Lock - Right Locker for 299
the other is the No Slip traction System for 419

We would want the locker, I think???

The sight says the only difference is the Locker makes a clicking noise when turning and the No Slip is quite. For the extra money I can handle the clicking noise since my MTRs make noises when turning anyway.

Anybody know anything different or have any ideas?

Myself and many others have always installed the unit for 410.00. It is a real nice unit and very easy to install.

How is this different than Limited slip which send the power to the wheel with the most traction? How is this different from a locker? Is an air locker still better?

This will lock up exactly like Air Locker. W/ an air locker you decide when to engage. The powertrax engages when torque is applied. Plus, you dont have to worry about the air line messing up or losing your electric supply.

sounds pretty sweet. may have to try one.

If it is torque controlled can you accelerate while in a turn?

On install do you have to remove the wheels and calipers and such?

Whoa. Thanks for all the replies. I'll really have to consider on of these real soon. It seems like you all have had great experiences with them.

so, the 8.8 will fit our open differential with 3.55 gear or does the gear matters?

I don't think that gear size maters. If you check out their website they have a guide to the part numbers

I have the no slip in my 97. Love it, the next locker i buy will be the no slip. While i'm driving, the only time i notice it is when i'm turning out of a drive way and i'm on the gas. Like he said, you'll learn it, but it great. Installation, yeah you're going to have to take that junk off for the most part. If you aren't very experienced with a rear end, i'd let some one else do it for you cause it can be a big mess and hassle. But they come with a great set of instructions. Oh, go out to wal mart or something and buy a 4wheeler magazine and look at the ads in there. I bought mine at Christmas for $369 free shipping, much cheaper in those books then from summit or jegs. Hope this helps!

Happy trails!!
