Hi Everyone,
about 4-5 years ago I put in a powertrax noslip in the rear axle of the ranger. With the big tires, and a lot of hard street driving I've never had a problem, and highly recommend it. I installed it myself in about 1 1/2 hours. Very straightforward and very good directions.
This weekend, I needed to get the parking brake working again, and they needed to remove the axles. In the process they had all these springs coming out. I'd warned them about it, but they came out anyway. Some of the springs were broken, and those second smaller inner springs are gone (no doubt flew over the guy's shoulder when he was taking it apart) so I called powertrax and it's 16 bucks for a spring kit that replaces all springs in the diff. It's on it's way, but while talking to powertrax they did say that they revised the tension of the springs slightly, because some springs of the ealier units had fatigued (the spring broke).
It's important to note that I had NO problems even with a few broken springs in the diff, so this is no big deal. It's more of something to be aware of if you have to go into the diff for any reason. Overall, I can honestly say with 60,000 plus miles on the differential since the install, that the single best upgrade I did on my truck was this change. I drive the vast majority of it on the road, and it's better than the big tires, the lift kit, and conversion to 4wd.
