So after cleaning my MAFS I finally got rid of it, and it found it's way back to me today.

The things I have done between cleaning the MAFS and today. Adjusted TPS, compression test and replaced 2 spark plugs (2 Motorcraft and 4 Bosch). I also wiped down a couple of the engine bay plastic pieces to give them a shine again (but I seriously doubt that did it lol).

I now believe that my purge valve is out, because I smell gas every day but there is no evident leak. I read a couple of threads about it yesterday.

Could a block in the emissions cause pre-detonation??

I want to replace this soon, but finally get the time tomorrow. The smell makes me feel like I'm in a hooptie.

Thanks guys in advance!

A block in the emissions or exhaust could cause carbon build-up, and predetonation, sure. I'd suggest losing the Bosch plugs first though, and just using the right Motorcraft ones all around before troubleshooting anywhere else. With new plugs, you might want to try using some Top Tier gas like Chevron or Shell if you've been using discount gas, sometimes a few tanks of it will clean up carbon deposits. Take care of your purge valve and hopefully it'll be problems solved.

Bosch plugs aren't good? I've never had problems with them...I've been getting gas a Kum and Go or Caseys. Not Chevron and Shell. I know there's a Shell around here somewhere, cause I've seen commercials for them. I live in the city so I'm sure I'll find one. I'm looking at replacing the purge valve today or tomorrow. Hopefully I'll get it all figured out. Thanks for your input good sir :)

Ok I ordered the part and I'm supposed to pick it up Friday.

K I picked it up today. It took me 5 minutes to install it and remove the broken piece off of the old one when I removed it (opps lol). I can still hear detonation, so maybe it just needs to clear itself out? I haven't smelled gas when I was driving it but I was also doing 55 down a inner-city highway. We'll have to see if the smell goes away (crosses fingers).

Just an update...

The gas smell comes and goes. It was there today. I've basically stopped driving my Explorer. Time to match all the spark plugs and see if that solves it....

Does ANYONE have ANY IDEA what else this could be. This post seems abandoned so I'm shooting in the dark.

Thanks again.
