The exhaust on my '89 Dakota Convertible completely rusted through and I need a new manifold y-pipe and cat intermediate pipe.

There doesn't seem to be any aftermarket stainless replacements and I'm a DIY guy, so custom pipes at a shop is no good. I'm stuck with a mild steel Walker replacement (unless you think Fed-Mog or another comp. is better).

My question is, can I paint my new pipes to prevent rusting? I'm especially considering a high-temp VHT or Por-15 paint.

Has anyone tried this? Is this going to stop rust or is this a waste of time and money?

I read in Sport Compact Car, or Super Street, that each coat of high temp paint on your exhaust will extend it's life by one year.

If/when I upgrade my exhaust system, I plan to hit it with many coats. I figure it's cheap, and worth a try :dunno:
