Have an 04 explorer with the 4.0. I hear a rattle from the front. Can hear it better under the front of the truck. Not as loud when looking under the hood. Im guessing the primary guide is shot?

Either that or the balance shaft tensioner or both.

Thats what I thought.

Thanks

Finally got the time to pull it apart last night. Everything looked like new. Nothing broken. Turned out that the ring in the balancer broke away and is the cause of the rattle.

Question

I have an 4.0 SOHC with the darn timing chain rattle is this eventually gonna be something that is going to cause serious engine damage or just make this crazy noise for ever. Also whats a good shop manual to get for my 04 mountaineer. Any help is great thanks

Check the balancer before buying anything. If it is indeed the timing guides it may cause the motor to jump time if they are really bad.

Thanks now i am just trying to decide wether to tackle this myself or take it to the mechanic.
